Bio
My personal research agenda is directed by the search of artifacts properties. During the 20th century, we developed lots of mechanical artifacts, which were progressively embedded with electronics and software. We automated tangible things. We included software into hardware, and needed to better understand how to deal with automation. Since the beginning of the 21st century, we are experiencing the opposite trend; anything that we start designing is done on a computer! Consequently, we start in a virtual world. We can design a full aircraft as a piece of software and fly it! Good thing is that we can test functionality very early during design. Human-systems integration (HSI) can be investigated using human-in-the-loop simulations and human activity can be observed. Simplifying, the problem is no longer automation, but tangibility of the end product. We need to better understand the shift form the virtual world to the real world, and develop tangible interactive systems (TISs). Tangibility can be physical and figurative. The former is based on physics and the latter on cognition. Human Centered design (HCD) is now possible because we have very realistic simulation environments that enable designers to consider human factors at design time. HCD requires that the organization is prepared to accept humanization of technology. Long-term vision, creativity, expertise and experience are key factors for success. Complexity science and cognitive engineering are key HCD disciplines. Fusion of HCD and systems engineering leads to Human-Systems Integration (HSI).
