Professor Hallegraeff is an internationally recognised expert in harmful algal blooms impacting on human health, the fish farm, and shellfish industries, and their stimulation by coastal eutrophication, unusual climate conditions, and global spreading via ship's ballast water. His life-time research achievements have been recognised by the 2014 Yasumoto award from the International Society for Harmful Algae (ISSHA) and 2004 Eureka Prize for Environmental Research.
