Career Trajectory
Bio
Guillermo Vigueras is Associate Professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Valencia. During his doctoral studies, he carried out various research stays at European institutions such as the Graphics Laboratory of the University of Cyprus, under the supervision of Yiorgos Chrysanthou, or the Distributed Systems and Middleware Group of INRIA-Rennes, under the supervision of Thierry Priol. After completing his doctoral thesis, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at King's College of London (London, United Kingdom) and the IMDEA Materials Institute (Madrid, Spain), where he worked with multidisciplinary teams on computational modeling of different scientific and engineering problems. During his stay at KCL, he developed the first GPU-based implementation of an electromechanical model of the human heart for personalized patient diagnosis and surgical planning in real clinical settings. Later, at the IMDEA Software Institute, he was working as a postdoctoral researcher using machine learning techniques and data analysis for the automatic transformation and optimization of programs. Currently, he is a senior researcher at the MEDAL laboratory (Medical Data Analytics Laboratory) where he works on applying data analysis methods and machine learning to the medical domain.
During his research career, Guillermo Vigueras has participated in several regional, national and European research projects, as a team member, as technical coordinator and as principal investigator. As a result of his career, Guillermo Vigueras has over 20 publications in referred journals and international conferences. He also has published about 30 papers in national and international conference proceedings.
In the academic side, Guillermo Vigueras has taught undergraduate and master's degrees throughout his career at various Spanish universities. On the other hand, in recent years he has leaded several educational innovation projects, obtaining an award for the second best educational innovation idea at UPM.
Research Interests:
In the past, his research interests have focused on developing parallel implementations of various scientific problems in order to exploit heterogeneous computing platforms. Furthermore, he has also applied his previous experience in code parallelization for the automatic transformation of programs on heterogeneous platforms. This line of research involved the use of machine learning for the automatic transformation of programs in order to improve functional and non-functional properties of the code, such as resource and energy consumption or execution time. The objective of this research is the generation of efficient software for heterogeneous platforms and to reduce the programming cost for these type of platforms, allowing its use by a wider range of users. Currently his research interests are focused on the use of Machine Learning and Big Data, in various problems in the field of engineering and medicine.
