Research Interests
1) My first independent research project dealt with new methods for glycoside synthesis and
investigations on the mechanism of these reactions. The result of this work formed the main part of
my habilitation's thesis (see a review : G. Wulff, G. Röhle, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl. 1974, 13,
157-170).
2) My main research area started in 1972 with a short communication (G. Wulff, A. Sarhan,
Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl. 1972, 11, 341). The preparation of crosslinked polymers with specific cavities obtained by a novel molecular imprinting procedure was a main achievement in our research work. Thus, synthetic molecularly imprinted polymers have been engineered to provide enzyme-like specificity and activity and they now present a powerful tool for creating highly efficient catalysts. The principle consists of binding polymerizable functional groups by covalent or non-covalent bonds to a suitable template molecule.. This aggregate then is copolymerized with crosslinking monomers. After removal of the template an imprint is left. The shape of the imprint and the arrangements of the functional groups are complementary to the structure of the template. This procedure we patented in 1972. In the meanwhile this method is used in many research groups all over the world. Important applications are selective binding in chromatography, solid phase extraction, antibody mimics for immuno-essays, selective sensor layers in chemo.sensors , and enzyme mimics and catalysts.
