His research interests include ultrafast pulse generation and characterization schemes, optical filamentation, methods for measuring and stabilizing the carrier-envelope phase of mode-locked lasers as well as coherence, noise, and rogue waves of such laser sources.,In 2002, he was awarded the Habilitation in Experimental Physics. He served as a Topical Editor of Optics Letters from 2012 to 2018, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Physical Review A, and an Associate Editor for Optica. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Referee Award of APS. He acted as program or general chair for a variety of scientific conferences, including EQEC 2011, IQEC 2013, HILAS 2014, HILAS 2016, Ultrafast Optics 2017, and HILAS 2018. He has published some 170 papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored or coauthored a total of nine book chapters. Finally, he is inventor or coinventor of eight patents, two of which had been transferred to a laser company that successfully commercialized them for offset-free stabilization of the carrier-envelope phase of laser oscillators. He is a member of the German Physical Society and the European Physical Society; he is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the American Physical Society, and the International Union of Radio Scientists.(Based on document published on 26 August 2018).
