个人简介
Since becoming an independent investigator my primary focus has been on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that mediate the adaptation of tissues to changes in functional demands. A major theme in this work has been the modulation of the adaptation of skeletal muscle in the presence of alterations in loading state as well as changing signals received via endocrine, autocrine / paracrine agents (e.g. hormones, growth factors & cytokines). In this process my work has been focused on the effects of various loading states such as spinal cord injury, experimental unloading or resistance exercise. In parallel, my work has investigated the interactions of manifestations of disease states (e.g., renal failure, chronic inflammation) with cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle homeostasis in humans, mature and developing animals. A relevant, over-arching, theme of my work has been the application of programmed increases in functional demand (e.g., exercise) in the presence of unloading, various diseases or disease related components. The work from my laboratory has demonstrated, both in humans and animals, that programmed exercise can modulate and ameliorate some manifestations of disease states. I have worked to identify and develop opportunities for the translation of research findings pioneered in animals to human studies.
