个人简介
I aim to conduct research that helps make the health care system work more efficienty and equitably.
My colleagues and I have helped generate new knowledge on the value of primary care and how it contributes to personal and population health. I produced some of the first nationally representative results on where deficits in primary care exist for children and families, and helped build an evidence base for models of primary care (such as the patient-centered medical home) that are now widely promoted in medicine.
I have also contributed to new theory about how health disparities are created and can be remedied. My colleague and I developed the General Model of Vulnerability (described in detail in our book Vulnerable Populations in the United States (Jossey-Bass, 2005, 2010 and 2021). This model uniquely portrays vulnerability as a spectrum of risk, and can serve as a framework for better coordinating public health, health care and social policy.
My work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIDDK R01), DHHS (Bureau of Health Professions, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and Administration for Community Living), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, California Endowment, and the California Program on Access to Care.
