Bio
Dr. Carter is currently a board certified faculty neurologist and sleep medicine physician at the Clinical Center for Sleep and Breathing Disorders of Clements University Hospital and Program Director of the UT Southwestern Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program. He was Chief of the Neurology and Sleep Medicine Section of the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas until August 30, 2009. At the VAMC he spent 25 years involved in basic and clinical research. After finishing his PhD dissertation studies in monoamine metabolism in the neostriatum (Carter 1985), he developed extensive experience in epilepsy, stroke, and clinical pharmacology. In the field of epilepsy, his research has included animal models of epileptogenesis (Carter & Warner, 1987, 1988, 1989) and human studies in epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs (Mattson, et.al. 1992 & 1996, Privitera, et.al.,1996). He has also served as principal investigator in a study of acute pharmacological intervention in new strokes (1995) and was a co-investigator in the NIH-sponsored ACE trial of aspirin and carotid endarterectomy, as well as, a NIAAA study of alcoholism. In 2014 Dr. Carter obtained ACGME approval for a sleep medicine fellowship program that now involves Clements University Hospital's Clinical Center for Sleep and Breathing, Children's Health's Sleep Disorders Center, and the VA North Texas Health Care Center's Sleep Center in a program that trains three clinical fellows per year. Dr. Carter has published his work in home testing for sleep apnea, as well as, an editorial and article on management of obstructive sleep apnea and sleep fellowship training of psychiatrists, plus book chapters on caffeine and sleep disorders and delayed sleep wake phase disorders. Dr. Carter has two additional book chapters coming out in late 2020 regarding obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia in pregnancy. He remains interested in research on the management of restless leg syndrome and REM sleep behavior disorder.
