Bio
Gregor Jurak is full professor at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and a head of SLOfit research team (https://en.slofit.org/team), one of the most propulsive European teams using fitness monitoring for educational and health purposes. He is also head of an international FitBack network (www.fitbackeurope.eu/en-us/) that supports development of systems for monitoring physical fitness of children and adolescents. He received a bachelor’s degree in physical education, master’s degree and PhD in kinesiology and master’s degree in economics from University of Ljubljana.
In youth, he was a top athlete, member of a national swimming team. In his sports carrier he broke several national records and he has affirmed himself internationally. He was the best junior swimmer at the Yugoslav national championships (1986, 1987, 1988), the most successful junior swimmer at the Balkan Championships (1988) and third on European Junior Championships (1989). He is respected in his local community as well; three times (1987, 1988, and 1989) he was awarded a title of sports personality of Town of Celje.
After graduate, he worked as PE teacher, coach, university asistent and professor, project manager of several national sport projects, director of Sport Foundation and vice-dean. He has been working in several professional national boards and expert groups on different areas of sport such as: expert group for swimming pool constructing in Slovenia, school sports competitions board, experts groups for national sports programmes Golden Sun and Krpan, expert council of Slovenian swimming association, national exam office, commission for renovation of PE curriculums, expert group for categorisation of sports achievements in Republic of Slovenia, committee for organisational and law issues of Slovenian Olympic Committee, council for top sport of Slovenian Olympic Committee, expert group for designing national sports programme for 2-5 years old children, board for informatics of Slovenian sport.
His main research interests include Physical Fitness, Physical Activity, Motor Development, Didactics of PE and Sports management. He has published more than 70 research papers. He is member of editorial board in few scientific journals and he was president of organisational committee of two international congresses Youth Sport (2008, 2010). Additionally, he is or he was a head of few national project teams in EU projects CrowdHEALTH, SportGO, Sport in 3D, and Sustainable management of sport facilities. He has experience in setting up national programs in the field of health enhanced physical activity (he is the first author of current National Programme for Sport; co-author of few national promotional sport programs). He has also experience in setting up national IT projects in sport and physical activity (SLOfit, national sport facilities database, public financed sport programs database) and physical fitness intervention programs (enhanced PE, Healthy lifestyle program). He is national delegate in few international organizations and forums (FIEP, EUPEA, GoFPEP, CEREPS) as well as in EU member state groups in EU XGs Economic Dimension and Human Resource Management in Sport.
