个人简介
Dr. Grace F. Gomez joined Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) in September 2020 as a postdoctoral research fellow and is now appointed as visiting Assistant Research Professor serving the Division of Dental Informatics in the Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental Public Health. Dr. Gomez is an internationally trained dentist with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) degree from M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. She received her Master of Public Health Degree (MPH) from the University of Toledo, Ohio, USA. She completed her PhD in Dental Sciences at IUSD. Dr. Gomez mentored under Dr. Richard L. Gregory in the Microbiology and Immunology Laboratory. Her dissertation research area of interest focused on the photo mediated destruction of S. mutans, which is the primary cariogenic bacterium. Following her PhD work, Dr. Gomez completed her Dental Public Health residency at Case Western Reserve University, School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Gomez’ long-term career goal is to delve into the field of dental academic research, teaching and service through new learning and conducting collaborative research. During the first-year period of her postdoctoral fellowship she worked on mentored projects primarily through the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Thankam Thyvalikkakth. Dr. Gomez perceives informatics as a public health measure tool to promote good oral and systemic health. Her IUSD experience provides support for her professional future by incorporating informatics in epidemiologic surveillance, prevention, promotion of oral health and for an overall improvement in access to oral health care services for the disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. Dr. Gomez would also like to incorporate her life science skills from the doctoral program in dental sciences into research projects with bioinformatic applications, expanding her professional acumen by opening new avenues for research skills, and contributing to previously gained knowledge and skills sets. The fellowship training provides an opportunity to promote oral health at a community level, preparation for an academic faculty position and additional personal opportunities to conduct research, teach and serve at an institutional level.
