I started to work with GAs as one of the European early birds, publishing a theoretical paper about GA convergence in 1990. Later on I turned to experimental work and studied various aspects of Evolutionary Algorithms - a more general class of algorithms where GAs are just one subtype. Research subjects I studied extensively include: multi-parent crossover operators, constraint satisfaction, off-line parameter tuning and on-line parameter control of EAs, evolutionary art, and Artificial Life / Evolutionary Robotics. I am also teaching Evolutionary Computing and published the textbook that has become a best seller (Eiben and Smith, Introduction to Evolutionary Computing, Springer, 2003). Lately I am more and more interested in evolutionary processes outside the digital, imaginary spaces that form the natural habitat of Evolutionary Computing. In other words, I am working on "transporting" artificial evolution from computer simulations to physical substrates.
