Bio
David González Andrade is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow at the Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies (C2N), where he has been working since June 2021 on the development of silicon photonic integrated circuits for applications in high-speed optical communications and the generation of high-quality radiofrequency signals based on Brillouin scattering.
He obtained the B.Sc. and the M.Sc. Degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Málaga (UMA) in 2014 and 2016, respectively. He developed his Master’s Thesis at the Photonics and Radiofrequency Laboratory group, for which he received the TELTRONIC Award for the Best Master's Thesis from the Spanish Official College of Telecommunication Engineers (COIT).
In May 2017, he was granted a national predoctoral fellowship (formerly FPI) to conduct his PhD at the Institute of Optics “Daza de Valdés” from Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IO-CSIC). Three years later, he received the PhD in Physics from the Complutense University of Madrid with Cum Laude and international mentions. His research lines during PhD focused on the exploitation of subwavelength metamaterials for the design of high-performance photonic microdevices, reporting breakthrough advances in the fields of mode-division multiplexing, optical phase shifting and beam splitting. Proof of the excellent results achieved during his PhD are: i) the creation of a wide network of internationally recognized collaborators (UMA, NRC, C2N, Alcyon Photonics S.L., STMicroelectronics), and ii) the recognition received for his PhD dissertation, for which he was granted with the COIT-AEIT Award for the Best PhD Thesis in Technologies and Applications of Telecommunication Engineering and the Madrid City Council Award for Best PhD Thesis in Application of Technological Tools.
After his PhD graduation, he was bestowed a postdoctoral contract (POP-FPI). During this one-year period, he set up from scratch the experimental laboratory at IO-CSIC for the characterization of waveguide-based nanophotonic devices and collaborated with Alcyon Photonics S.L. to develop novel architectures for mode-division multiplexing. He also continued to work closely with the C2N, developing silicon nitride circuits for spectroscopy applications in the near-infrared band, as well as dual-band grating couplers for passive optical networks, both using the R&D platform of STMicroelectronics.
His work has led to 14 publications (9 as first author), being all of them Q1 according to JCR/SJR. He has also contributed to 77 national and international conferences (34 invited presentations), one of which received the Best Poster Award. In addition to being PI of an MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship, he has participated as a researcher in 3 European projects (H2020-MSCA-RISE, FP7-PEOPLE-ITN, EMPIR), in 5 projects funded by national and regional programs, and in 3 projects funded by private companies. His scientific activities have led to 7 patent applications. The applied nature and the impact on technology transfer of these inventions are illustrated by the fact that said patents have already been licensed to a private company for the exploitation in co-titularity. Furthermore, this patent has attracted the attention of a private seed-capital investing funds, leading to the creation of the spin-off company Alcyon Photonics S.L.
Regarding outreach and mentoring activities, he is fully committed and involved in different activities to disseminate science to a broad audience. In 2018 he participated in the 4º ESO+Empresa program of the Community of Madrid, performing scientific outreach to students from different high schools in Madrid. The same year he also participated in the introduction to research course for undergraduate students (CSIC). In 2021, he was supervisor of undergraduate student internships (Complutense University of Madrid) and in 2022, he participated in the Fête de la Science for schoolchildren aged 6 to 9 (MISS, Bures-sur-Yvette, France) and coordinated a visit to EDF laboratories for PhD and postdocs of the C2N. Besides, he has taught 2 courses on introduction to photonic simulation, has been organizer of the 1st SINFOTON2-CM Fall Fair (University of Alcalá de Henares) and the 7th ePIXfab Summer School (C2N), and has delivered 6 invited seminars at renowned institutions (IOSA, CEMDATIC, Complutense University, CSIC, UMA).
His research experience is further completed with teaching activities. He has supervised 3 Master's Thesis of students from the Carlos III University of Madrid and the Complutense University of Madrid. He is currently co-supervising 1 PhD Thesis at IO-CSIC. Finally, he is frequently invited by editors to serve as a reviewer in high-impact journals (Optics Letters, Photonics Research, Journal of Lightwave Technology, Advanced Photonics Research, etc.), and has been appointed external reviewer of two PhD dissertation and member of a PhD Thesis Committee.
