Bio
My research expertise is on nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMRS),stress effects on brain and behavioral experiments, immunohistochemistry, and electrophysiology as well as their data analysis. I extensively worked on developing NMRS with stable isotope labeling (3C) and kinetic modeling to elucidate metabolic pathway fluxes in neurons and glia of the intact brain in vivo and ex vivo rodents” model on our high-field MRS scanner (ie., 9.4 T, 11.7T) as well as working on the rodent brain at different behavioral states, including the awake state. I have over 19 years”experience on deciphering the mechanism(s) linking glutamate and GABA neurotransmitter cycling to brain activity, and the role of glucose and alternative substrates (e.g., monocarboxylic acids) in this operation, My current research is focused on understanding the role of altered glucose and neurotransmitter metabolism of brain functioning and facilitating the translation of basic science research to various clinical applications (e.g., brain development, depression, diabetes). Moreover, my research identified 3C and 1H MRS flux-based biomarkers of mitochondrial energetics and neurotransmitter cycling in various neurodegenerative diseases (Huntington's disease,Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,Parkinson disease,Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, early life stress, schizophrenia, bipolar disease).
