个人简介
Giorgio Mattei was born in Poggibonsi (Italy) in 1986. He received the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biomedical Engineering (both cum laude) at the University of Pisa (Italy) in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He obtained a PhD in Chemical and Materials Engineering at the Univ. of Pisa in May 2014, then he was a Post-Doc researcher at the Research Centre ''E. Piaggio'' (Univ. of Pisa) until Oct 2016. He won a Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF) European research grant thanks to which he was a Research Fellow at Optics11 B.V. (The Netherlands). Since Jul 2018, he is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pisa.
His research is mainly focused on engineering 3D pathophysiological organ models in-vitro and involves both i) biomaterial design and characterization to develop hydrogel-based smart modular scaffolds for in-vitro cell cultures and ii) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, design and realization of bioreactors for the dynamic cultivation and real-time monitoring of cell constructs.
His MSCA-IF project (acronym ENDYVE, grant no. 705296) was aimed at engineering the temporal variation of viscoelastic properties of biological tissues (namely, dynamic viscoelasticity) typical of pathophysiological processes in-vivo to investigate its role on cell behavior (focusing on cardiomyocyte maturation).
He filed 2 patents (WO2015044813 & EP3115449, pending, both granted in Italy), co-authored 20+ publications in high impact international peer-reviewed journals for many of which he serves also as a reviewer (including Nature Scientific Reports and Acta Biomaterialia).
In addition, he is strongly interested in technology transfer and has co-founded a spin-off company in January 2014 (IVTech s.r.l., www.ivtech.it) devoted to the design of in-vitro technologies for advanced in-vitro cell cultures. He is R&D manager for the development of optically transparent cell culture devices and has been a member of the BoD.
