Bio
Giorgia Purcaro is Analytical Chemistry professor at the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Department at the University of Liège (Belgium). She was Research Scientist at Dartmouth College (NH, USA) for 2 years, where she worked on the application of GCxGC-MS in breath analysis for the determination of lung infection biomarkers. She was the R&D Director at Chromaleont srl, a spin-off of the University of Messina. She was assistant professor at the Department of Food Science at the University of Udine from 2012 to 2015. She took a degree in Food Science and Technology at the University of Udine in 2002 with the maximum votation (110/110 with laudem). She took her PhD in Food Science (XX cycle) at the University of Udine in 2008. As a PhD student, she spent 6 months at the RMIT University in Melbourne (Australia), working on the development of rapid analytical techniques based on hyphenated chromatography methods (GCxGC), in collaboration with Professor P.J. Marriott. From October 2008 to February 2011 she operated in the laboratories of Professor L. Mondello at the University of Messina, where she develops comprehensive chromatography methods (GC x GC, LC x GC), with different interface and detection systems, for the investigation of natural complex food matrices.
Her research interests include food contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, mineral oil) and development of conventional chromatography techniques (HRGC-FID, HRGC-MS, HPLC-UV, HPLC-FLD), as well as comprehensive chromatography ones (GC x GC, LC-GC, LC x GC). She studies the potential of a novel flow modulator as GC x GC interface and the capabilities of the quadrupole mass spectrometer for GC x GC detection. Her attention has been focused on olive oil authentication problem studied by considering the fingerprint of the volatile fraction of different oils by applying flavouromics and sensomics approaches along with GCxGC-MS technique.
More recently she has explored the metabolomics field of breath analysis for discovery of biomarkers of lung disease. She has applied advanced machine learning algorithms to extrapolate useful information from the multidimensional and multivariate data obtainable with modern analytical techniques.
Up to July 2018 she has been co-author of 65 articles in international journals and 10 book chapters published by international editors. She was co-author for 2 contributions on Chromedia (Chromatography Knowledge Base), on line edition. She has been co-author of more than 100 congress contributions (oral and/or posters) at national and international Symposia and Conference.
Up to date, the bibliometric indices characterizing the editorial production of Dr. Purcaro are as follows (source Scopus) : H-Index: 20; Total number of citation: 1088.
She won the Lerici award for the best PhD thesis in the field of food science in 2009. She won the Leslie Ettre award at the 34th International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography (ISCC) in 2010 for an outstanding contribution judged by a panel of international leaders in separation science. She was included in the list "Top40under40" published in the magazine The ANalytical Scientist in 2014. She won the John Phillips award, awardedto individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of GC×GC analysis in Prof. Phillips' honor (at the 39th International Symposium of Capillary Chromatography & 12th GC×GC Symposium, 2015, Fort Worth, Texas (USA)).
She is also referee of the several international journals in the field of analytical chemistry and food science.
