Bio
I graduated in 2004 on Marine Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), with a training in aquaculture at Florida Institute of Technology (USA). In February 2009, I completed my PhD in Applied Ecology (Wastewater Wetlands) at FCUL in collaboration with Vrije Universiteit Brussel. In February 2009 I started a Post-Doc on ecosystem engineering modeling (in collaborating with Southern Denmark University) and in November 2011 I extended the focus of my Post-Doc topic into Integral Ecology, integrating cultural, socio-economic & policy dimensions. My intention was to find robust strategies that promote local sustainability and climate resilience, and I found CCIAM research group to best support and benefit from this research topic.
From 2013 to 2019 I lectured on the Climate Change and Sustainable Developmental Policies Doctoral Program of Lisbon University and have founded in 2014 the European platform of Community-led initiatives towards a Sustainable Europe (ECOLISE: www.ecolise.eu).
I coordinated and participated for nearly 10 years in European and Portuguese projects to better understand, integrate and ground climate change local mitigation and adaptation (e.g., BASE, BEACON and ClimAdaPT.Local, that aimed at elaborating Municipal Adaptation and/or Mitigation Strategies and promote local climate action).
I also developed frameworks and tools to support local initiatives and communities to grow and develop the required competences and skills to be sustainable and resilient (e.g., CATALISE and EcoGamer). Recently I finished a 5 year contract with the topic of “Bio(re)Design of technological, ecological and socio-economic systems at the local scale to improve human well-being”. During this period I understood that it is fundamental to upgrade the epistemology, cosmology and ontology of research in order to upgrade the “thoughtware” of people and communities (including organisations) in order to truly regenerative and evolve the bioregions and breakthrough the systemic crisis humanity and the planet is currently going through. In other words, it becomes fundamental to make sure we are not trying “to solve the problem within the same level of paradigm that created them” (paraphrasing Albert Einstein).
