Bio
My primary interest is understanding material organisation in complex oxides and nanostructured materials using experiments and computer modelling at the atomic and at the mesoscopic scale. Of particular interest are out-of-equilibrium processes, charge and spin correlations, effects of defect accumulation, and radiation effects on the behaviour of oxide systems. Functional materials with strict long-range order were well-understood and characterised for almost a century. On the other hand, the description of disordered materials is still challenging: no broadly applicable methods exist to assess features arising from the competition between long and short-range order: properties like electronic localisation are entangled with these features. Theory and experiments can help predicting and tailoring heterophase interfaces, nanoscale features, and defects that can occur in bulk microcrystalline systems, in single-crystals, and in nano-crystalline organisations. Prominent systems under investigation are actinide, lanthanide, and transition metal oxides, and systems where different short and long range order compete, leading to disordered or out-of equilibrium structures. This competition can be intrinsic or externally enhanced by a system perturbation like radiation or an applied stress.
