Bio
I started my research career as electron microscopist performing studies on the synaptic development of the chicken optic tectum. Later, I was interested in the neuroanatomical organization of avian hypothalamus, that I studied both with Golgi impregnation and with the electron microscopy. Following these studies I was attracted by interdisciplinary studies on the neural circuits controlling sexual behavior. The preferred experimental model was the Japanese quail, where we discovered a sexually dimorphic nucleus within the preoptic region and, later, a sexually dimorphic vasotocin circuit in the BST, lateral septum and medial preoptic nucleus. At the same time my researches involved more and more rodents, in particular mice, and were targeted to two main systems, the vasopressin and the NO-producing systems, as well as the role that gonadal hormones play in modulating them
In the last 10 years my main research topic was the behavioral and neural effects of the precocious exposure to environmental endocrine disruptors. My studies covered the effects of DDT derivates, DES, bisphenol A and, recently, genistein.
I am also the organizer of a series of conferences that are held in Torino, dedicated to the effects of Steroids on the Nervous System. My teaching activity is dedicated to Neuroanatomy, Neuroimaging, and Behavioral Neuroendocrinology.
