Bio
Dr Gerard Stone is Program Director of the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and Commerce programs, and the Accounting Finance double programs at the UniSA Business School. Gerard is also Program Director of the Bachelor of Accounting program at Open Universities Australia. He is a member of the Centre for Sustainability Governance (CSG) research centre and a Fellow of CPA Australia. Gerard joined UniSA in 2002. Prior to joining UniSA, he worked in the accounting profession and media.
Gerard holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Commerce from UniSA. He was the 2001 UniSA medalist for most outstanding Business School graduate. Gerard’s current research focuses on integrated reporting and social media’s role in accounting communications and accounting education. His research has been published in a range of accounting focused journals, including Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, and presented at conferences both in Australia and overseas, including the Environmental and Sustainability Management Accounting Network conference. He is an active research degree supervisor and the recipient of a Supported Researcher Award.
Gerard has received many Teaching Awards and Commendations. His recent Awards and Commendations include 2017 and 2016 Business School awards in Student Experience and Top Teaching Teams, a 2015 Business School Teaching and Learning Commendation, and a 2014 Business School Achievement in Industry Collaboration Teaching and Learning Award. Gerard has coordinated and designed a number of courses within the Business School, and he is involved in the development of learning resources which focus on developing accounting students’ teamwork and communication skills. He has published journal articles, book chapters and presented his research on communication skills development at national conferences. His contribution in this field was recognised when his research on developing accounting students’ listening skills was awarded best paper in the education stream at the 2012 Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand Conference.
Gerard is engaged with business and the accounting profession through research collaborations with CPA Australia, and ensuring that the UniSA Business School’s accounting programs continue to satisfy professional accounting body accreditation and Australian Qualifications Framework standards and learning outcomes. He has also secured accreditation and recognition of the School's accounting programs by the prestigious global accounting bodies The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, The Association of International Accountants, and The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. In addition, he is involved in the Business School's ongoing Assurance of Learning project. A graduate of UniSA at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Gerard brings more than 15 years of experience in accounting and accounting education to the UniSA Business School.
