George Mandler was a central figure in the cognitive revolution launched in the 1950’s and 1960’s, with signature contributions in the psychology of memory, consciousness, and emotions. He is particularly recognized for his research contributions in organization of memory, theories of recall and recognition, the return of studies of consciousness to the psychological sciences, and the integration of mind, body, and emotions. He is the author of Mind and Emotion, Mind and Body: Psychology of Emotion and Stress, Human Nature Explored, A History of Modern Experimental Psychology, and other books. He has received numerous awards and recognition, including the William James Award from APA, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and Fellow status in the Society for Experimental Psychology and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
His contributions to the profession of psychology are unequalled. His service includes being editor of Psychological Review, governing board member and chair of the Psychonomic Society, president of two Divisions of APA (Experimental Psychology and General Psychology), chair of the Council of Editors of APA, chair of the Society for Experimental Psychologists, and founding president of the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological, and Cognitive Sciences.
