Georg Weiglein is Leading Scientist at DESY and Visiting Professor of Durham University (U.K.). His main area of research is elementary particle physics, in particular Higgs physics, supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, electroweak precision physics, renormalisation of spontaneously broken gauge theories, as well as the interplay of physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and possible future colliders. After the spectacular discovery of a signal in the Higgs-boson searches at the LHC it is now the prime goal to identify the underlying physics of the new state and to determine the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, which is responsible for providing fundamental particles with the property of mass. The research in this area, which is characterised by a close interaction between theory and experiment, may provide access to the underlying physics behind the Standard Model of particle physics.
