Bio
Prof Geoffrey S. Simate is a Full Professor in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. Prof Simate is also an Assistant Dean for Research in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has a PhD degree & an MSc (Eng) degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa), and a BEng honours degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham (UK). He also possesses a Master of Management degree in Innovation Studies. Prof Simate has over 20 years of both lecturing experience and industrial experience combined.
Prof Simate's research covers four thematic areas: (1) water treatment, (2) carbon nanotechnology, (3) (bio) hydrometallurgy, and (4) characterising and testing hot-mix asphalt for pavements. His first research focuses on low-cost water and wastewater treatment systems. This includes the development (or improvement) of adsorbent materials with tailored properties for water treatment and purification. More specifically, he is involved in the development of novel (bio) materials from wastes for water treatment and purification. His second research interest revolves around the production of carbon nanomaterials from various carbon sources and their applications in a number of fields including water treatment and biomedical. In his third research focus, he is particularly interested in the hydrometallurgical processing of valuable metals and other materials of value from low grade, lean ores and other alternative secondary sources such as waste material and dilute process streams using conventional and emerging reagents. His last research focus area, which is related to the use of waste materials (bitumen and/or asphalt), is based on collaborative work with Texas A&M University System (USA). This research centres on developing methods for characterizing and testing hot-mix asphalt for pavements. In addition, the research also focusses on the development of new bitumen and/or asphalt materials. His contribution in this area of research is mainly “critical analysis and interpretation of the structure and properties of bitumen and/ or asphalt composition”.
Prof Simate's scholarly and scientific record is excellent not only in quantity, but also in quality. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed research papers in leading scholarly journals, one specialist textbook, two edited books, 15 book chapters of which nine are invited book chapters in independent books, five are single authored book chapters and one is co-authored book chapter in the book I edited (2021 edition). In summary, he has 10 single authored book chapter. I also has more than 20 conference proceedings. These publications have been cited more than 2600 times by other researchers in Google Scholar, and over 1600 times in Scopus indexed journals as well as over 1300 in Web of Science. His current h-index and i10-index are 24 and 40 in Google Scholar, respectively, and 20 and 31 in Scopus, respectively. His h-index is 19 in Web of Science, respectively. He is currently C2 NRF-rated scientist (effective 2021) from a previous C3 NRF-rated scientist (effective 2015). The C2 NRF-rating shows that he is an established researcher who enjoys some international recognition for the quality and impact of his recent research outputs.
His leadership in research has been demonstrated when I took over the role of Assistant Dean in charge of research in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment in 2015, and the research outputs in the Faculty have increased because of a number of research strategies that I introduced. He is an Editorial and Advisory Board Member of African Journal of Engineering and Environmental Research. He is also serving as an Editorial Board Member of Minerals under the section of the journal called Mineral Processing and Metallurgy since December 2019. His roles as Editorial and Advisory Board Member of scholarly international journals, Guest Editor of a Special Issue in Minerals Journal, reviewer of various scholarly international journals, invitations by editors to contribute book chapters in several books and review papers, participant in international collaborative research projects, and having been awarded an NRF C2 rating from NRF C3 rating illustrate his international stand in my field of research.
Prof Simate has supervised to completion 2 PhD (with 4 ongoing) and 12 Master’s degrees (with 6 ongoing) students. He has also supervised 60 final year undergraduate student projects, and graduated 2 postgraduate diploma students. He has hosted one postdoctoral fellow (from 2017 - 2019), and currently is a co-host to two postdoctoral fellows (2020 – Current).
