Bio
Gary Hasey received the M.D. degree from the University of Alberta, AB, Canada, in 1977. He did his Psychiatry residency training at the University of Alberta (1978–1980, 1982) and at the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada (1980–1981). He also received the M.Sc. degree in neuroendocrinology from the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Toronto, in 1985.
He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, an Associate Member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a member in the School of Biomedical Engineering, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. His medical and psychiatric training began at the University of Alberta. Further studies into the neuropathology and treatment of mood disorders continued at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Toronto. He is currently the Director of the ECT program at McMaster University and founding Director of Canada's first therapeutic transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) laboratory. He and his engineering collaborators have developed computer-based machine learning algorithms to optimize the efficacy of various treatments for mood disorder and schizophrenia. Using these methods, his group has developed an automated digital psychiatric expert system capable of analyzing EEG and clinical data to determine psychiatric diagnosis and to predict response to TMS, antidepressant medication, antipsychotic medication and cognitive behavior therapy. In partnership with McMaster Industry Liaison Office, this technology is being commercialized through the company Digital Medical Experts, Inc., where he serves as a Chief Medical Officer.
