Bio
Guido Wilpers received the degree of Diplom-Physiker from the Gerhard-Mercator Universitt—Gesamthochschule Duisburg, Germany, in 1998 following his Diplomarbeit at the Joint European Torus nuclear fusion resarch center near Culham, U.K. He received the Dr. rer. nat. degree in physics from the Leibnitz-Universitt, Hannover, Germany, in 2002 for experimental work on an optical frequency standard with laser-cooled neutral calcium atoms in the millikelvin and microkelvin regime. The work was carried out at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig, Germany. He continued to work in the same area of quantum optics on a Feodor Lynen Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, CO, USA. In 2005 he joined the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, U.K., where he is engaged in work on the application of trapped ions for quantum metrology including the development of microfabricated devices.
