Bio
Brief profile of prof. Giuseppe Mensitieri
Giuseppe Mensitieri graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1985 at the University of Naples Federico II, where he is currently a full professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Head of the Department of Chemical, Materials and Production Engineering. He also served, in the same University, as Director of the Bachelor Program in Materials Science and Engineering and Director of the Master Program in Materials Engineering from 2005 to 2014 and as Coordinator of the PhD program in Industrial Product and Process Engineering from 2013 to 2019.
He has been Visiting Researcher at the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Toronto and of the North Carolina State University. In the framework of the Socrates/Erasmus program prof. Mensitieri has taught the course “Composites et polymeres” at the Ecole des Mines de St Etienne, Axe “Elaboration et transformation des materiaux” (from 2002 to 2005) - ‘Ingenieur Civil des Mines’. He is a member of Scientific Board of the Institute for Technological Research - IRT ‘Jules Verne’ – Nantes (Fr).
His research group counts 2 assistant professors, 3 post-docs and 6 PhD students. Research interests are mainly in the field of structure-properties relationships of polymeric materials and their composites. In particular, research activity has been focused on experimental and theoretical aspects of 1) sorption thermodynamics of polymers, 2) mass transport of low molecular weight compounds in polymers, composites and organic/inorganic hybrids, 3) interactional issues related to sorption and transport in polymers, 4) proton transport in polyelectrolyte membranes.
Research efforts have also been devoted to applications of these topics with particular focus on: 1) durability of polymer matrix composites; 2) polyelectrolyte membranes for fuel cells; 3) controlled drug delivery; 4) polymer based sensors for gases and vapours; 5) superabsorbing hydorgels.
He is author of 156 publications on peer reviewed international journals, 1 book, 14 book chapters and 6 International patents, with an h-index 38 (Scopus).
Research activities in the past 10 years have been financed by regional, national and European grants as well as by contracts with several companies operating in different fields of application of polymeric materials and polymer based composites (e.g. Alenia, Bridgestone, ST Microelectronics, SCA Molnlycke, Europea Microfusioni Aerospaziali, Laminazione Sottile)
Several experimental techniques have been developed by the research group. In particular, controlled atmosphere ultra-microbalances, including high-pressure systems and sub-atmospheric systems, are used to perform gases, vapors and mixtures sorption analyses up to 300°C and 300 atm. The ultramicrobalances are equipped also with a high-pressure view cell, a high definition CCD camera, and a software for drop profile analysis to allow for concurrent measurement of sorption isotherms of low m.w. compounds in molten polymers and of the specific volume and of the interfacial tension of resulting molten polymer-penetrant mixtures.
Permeability of polymers to gases and vapors are measured with custom-made permeabilimeters designed to work up to 50 atm and 150°C.
With the aim of addressing interactional issues, low molecular weight solubility in polymer systems is also investigated performing in situ FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopic analysis (including Raman and FTIR microscopy and TERS) on samples placed in controlled atmosphere cells operating up to 70 atm and 600°C as well as by using confocal Raman microscopy (for determination of concentration profiles).
Materials structure is analyzed by using AFM, SNOM, WAXS, SAXS, MDSC, DMA, TMA, TERS and SEM equipment while, for the evaluation of PVT behavior of polymers, a high-pressure dilatometer is available.
