个人简介
Since her BSc. Degree (2001-2006), Gilda Lopes decided that she wanted to follow a career in academia. During this period, at the University of Porto, her courses were related to Biology, Geology, and Science Education. After finishing her BSc., she was professionally capacitated to teach middle and high school students in the areas of Life and Earth sciences, and she worked as a teacher in the following two years. However, as her curiosity for scientific research increased, she decided to do a MSc. Degree in Geology and Education at the University of Porto (2006-2008). Those years in academia helped her to develop many scientific and pedagogic skills as well as, a vast number of transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary competencies which made her a better researcher.
At the end of her MSc. Degree, her interest in Geology grew stronger, and she decided to apply for a Ph.D. full grant in Geology that required working with fossilized spores and microplanton. This project had as main supervisor Prof. Paulo Fernandes, from the University of Algarve, Portugal, and was part of a collaboration with the Portuguese Geological Survey (LNEG) and Trinity College, University of Dublin. The project focused in achieving a better understanding of the biostratigraphy, paleoclimates and paleogeography of Portugal during the Paleozoic. While working on this project, she developed different laboratory and analysis skills related to stratigraphy, palynology, maturation, and geochemistry and, in 2012, the importance and quality of her research were awarded at The Palynological Society - AASP 45th Annual Meeting held in Kentucky, USA, with the Best Student Poster Award.
She completed her Ph.D. in December 2013 with Summa cum laude, and in May 2014, she moved to Norway to start a new post-doctoral project as a Biostratigrapher with specialization in Palynology, at the University of Bergen. This position was a fully funded project by the University of Bergen (UoB) and an industry consortium. Her research was focused on the early Carboniferous palynostratigraphy of the Barents Sea, and aimed to the development of a palynological biozonal scheme for this part of the succession, improving correlation within the basin and with adjacent basins. During this period, she was awarded three travel grants from the University of Bergen in collaboration with Equinor and the Meltzer Foundation. From March 2019 to December 2021 she worked as a researcher at the University of Algarve in a project focusing on palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic reconstructions of Permian Mozambican Karoo successions. Currrently she is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Sheffield, working in Professor Charles Wellman research group.
In the past 5 years, she has also developed a robust curricular path in academia. She taught a MSc course at the University of Bergen (UoB), namely Introduction to Paleozoic and Mesozoic palynology - with focus on pollen and spores, at the University of Algarve (UALG) she taught the following courses: Palaeoceanography and global changes; Stratigraphy and Paleobiology. She was a co-supervisor of a Master thesis concerning palynofacies methodologies at UoB, and 2 other MSc's at UAlg and University Agostinho Neto (Angola).
To promote scientific dissemination and development, she already co-organized several international conferences, seminars, and workshops, and participated in several scientific dissemination activities for the general public. She has revised several papers and was the editor of The Palynological Society Newsletter (ISSN: 0732-6041). Currently she is the secretary of the Commission Internationale de Microflore du Paleozoique and part of the editorial board of the ISI journal Palynology (Taylor and Francis). Additionally, she is also member of several committees (CIMA Scientific Commission; National scientific support group for Horizon Europe discussion).
