Bio
Giovanni Giusfredi was born in Montecatini Terme, Italy, in 1950. He received the Graduate degree (summa cum laude) in physics from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, in 1975.
He has been a Researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Ottica, Florence, Italy, since 1978. At the Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale Galileo Ferraris, Torino, Italy, he participated in the creation of an atomic clock based on a fine transition of metastable Mg at 601 GHz. He performed experiments of bistability and space-time instability in sodium, and in 1986 he was with Optical Science Center, Tucson, AZ, for one year, working on this topic. With colleagues, he has developed coherent sources in the near and mid-infrared, applied to the spectroscopy of metastable He and CO2 molecules, and a new technique of cavity ring down with saturated absorption, for the detection of molecular transitions with high accuracy in frequency and high sensitivity. He is also working on a beam of cooled Ytterbium for quantum optics studies.
