Bio
He worked on and published work on: 1. the biochemical characterization, cellular origin and biological activities of platelet-activating factor. He demonstrated the release of this phospholipidmediator from human leukoscytes and endothelial cells and investigated its role in thecardiovascular physiopathology and in tumor biology; 2. experimental models of kidney and lunginjury. In particular, he described themolecular machanisms invoved inimmunedeposit formationin experimental membranous glomerulonephritis and the mechanisms of complement-mediated
injury of tubular epithelial cells; 3. marrow and tissue derived stem cell separation andcharacterization; 4. renal immunopathology; 5. inflammatory and tumor angiogenesis; 6.identification, purification and functional characterization of adult human liver stem cell-like (HLSC); 7. Identification, purification and functional characterization of adult human kidneystem/progenitor cells; 8. Identification of tumor initiating stem-like cells in renal carcinomas; 9.purification and characterization of stem cell derived exosomes/microvesicles and characterization of their mRNA and miRNA content. In particular, he recently performed: -Studies on tumor stem cells, including the identification of human renal carcinoma tumor stem cells (FASEB 22:3696, 2008) and of the role in tumor vascularization (Am J Pathol. 169:2223, 2006; J Cell Mol Med. 13:309, 2009; J Natl Cancer Inst. 2011 103(24):1884-98). -Studies on bone-marrow derived or resident stem cells in renal/liver tissue regeneration as well as in the molecular mechanisms driving stem cell recruitment and differentiation, including the identification of adult human renal resident stem/progenitor cells (Am J Pathol. 166:545, 2005) and of adult human liver resident stem cells (Stem Cells. 24:2840, 2006; Hepatology. 2013 Jan;57(1):311-9). -Studies on stem cell/progenitor-derived exosomes/microvesicles including the demonstration of in vitro and in vivo transfer of genetic information to target cells (Blood. 110:2440, 2007; PLoS One.5:e11803, 2010; Cancer Res. 2011 Aug 1;71(15):5346; PLoS Biol. 2012, 10(12):e1001450; Biochem Soc Trans. 2013;41(1):283-7). Studies on the role of EVs in metastatic niche formation (Cancer Res. 2011 Aug 1;71(15):5346); Studies on EV regenerative potential (J Am Soc Nephrol. 20:1053, 2009; J Cell Mol Med 2009
PMID: 19650833) and anti-tumor activity (Stem Cells Dev. 2013 Mar 1;22(5):758-71; Stem Cells.
