Bio
Giovanni Cristoforo Bomboi graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sassari in 1982. He worked as a Researcher on the Physiology of Domestic Animals from 1983 and confirmed researcher from 1987 until 1997 at the same University. In 1998, he became Associate Professor specialized on the Physiology of Animal Nutrition and confirmed Professor in 2001 at the Department of Animal Biology merged into the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Sassari. He currently teaches the following courses Physiology of animal nutrition in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Anatomy and Physiology at the Department of Agriculture of University of Sassari. Post laurea: He teaches courses on muscle and laction physiology in postgraduate school of inspection of foods of animal origin at the Department of Veterinary Medicine of University of Sassari. He also taught the following courses: Cellular Physiology, propaedeutics of Biochemistry (Organic Chemistry),Veterinary Biochemistry and Biochemical and Chemical Veterinary Methodologies.Initially, his research activity focused on the study of the erythrocytary oxide-reductive mechanisms related to milk production in Sarda sheep (MURST 60%: erythrocytary enzymatic activities in domestic animals). Subsequently, his research concentrated on the physiological and metabolic effects of some natural feeds (i.e. Pistacia lentiscus L. and Oxalis cernua) and of different amounts of grass and concentrate during lactation in sheep, in the U.E. projects denominated CAMAR and "Maitrise des facteurs de production en ovins latiers, pour rèduire le couts, offrir une alternative d'elèvage pour le commununantès europèennes et ammeliorer la qualitè des produits" (1993). He also investigated the effects of various levels of physical exercise at the end of pregnancy on the productive and reproductive cycle of sheep, focusing on the energetic value of rations. The later study was part of the following projects: 1) INTERREG 2 on the “Characterization of some forage species for pasture improvement” (1996), 2) MIPAF on the “Improvement and further development of a software for the formulation of rations for sheep and goats" (2002), and 3) POM A03 on the "Valorization of dairy products of Southern Italy through the study of factors that determine their specificity". Moreover, he has also studied: a) a quick method to determine the glycemia of Sarda sheep in the field, in order to adapt their nutrition to their real metabolic requirements for pregnancy, and b) the physiological, productive and reproductive effects of the administration of cadmium and aflatoxin B1 in the diet of sheep (project SISPROLAT of the MIUR/MIPAF on the “Innovative systems for the safety of typical dairy products”). G. C. Bomboi has also conducted a research on the effects of body condition score and the frequency of breast-feeding on the duration of post-partum anaestrum in cattle of Sarda breed and its F1 with Charolais, in the E.U. project "Improving the efficiency of suckler cow production systems in less-favoured areas (LFAs) of the EC, consistent with the extensification objectives of the CAP". Recently, G. C. Bomboi has been studying the relationship between the ruminal production of acetic acid and growth hormones, and the characterisation of pseudogestation on Sarda goats (funded by the University of Sassari). In 2010/11/12/13 his research activity focused in the E.U. project FLOCK-REPROD:"Hormone-free non-seasonal or seasonal goat reproduction for a sustainable European goat-milk market" the objective of the project are:to master the use of the ‘male effect’ combined with light treatment as a means to induce synchronous ovulation in dairy goats for optimal efficiency of artificial insemination in and out of the natural reproduction season. In the years 2013/14 and 2015/16 his research activity focused in the RAS project "Modulation of the partition of dietary energy between milk and body reserves in sheep and goats" (funded by the Government of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, RAS). In the years 2017/2018 and 2019 his research activity focused in the AGRIS project "The effect of the incorporation of medecinal aromatic plants (rosmarinus officinalis and artemisia herba alba and urtica) in the diete of adult ram, on reproductive performances, blood metabolism and oxidative profile"(funded by AGRIS and DVM).
