Career Trajectory
Bio
His translational research has centred on using genetic disease models to understand molecular mechanisms of disease induction, progression and exacerbation in asthma, COPD, lung cancer and the interplay of interstitial pneumonias and fibrosis. He co-founded the Melbourne Longitudinal COPD cohort (MLCC). He co-discovered the role of Fas in lung inflammation, IL-4 in immune biasing in asthma models, the bronchoprotective PAR receptor system in the airway epithelium and SAA as a COPD biomarker. In 2008 he proposed the endotype concept of asthma (The Lancet), now widely accepted as a highly useful paradigm for target identification in this disease.
He was awarded the Research Medal of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand in 2006, and was elected a Fellow in 2014, for his contribution to lung disease research. He serves on the Board of Directors of this Society, where he is Chair of the Research Committee, and on the Council of the Australian Lung Foundation.
