Bio
Dr. George Amarandei graduated with a BSc in Physics and an MSc from ‘Al. I. Cuza’ University of Iasi, Romania and with a PhD from University of Limerick (UL), Ireland. He was ‘Ernst Mach’ Fellow at University of Innsbruck, Austria with a fellowship awarded by the Austrian Government, MSCA – Early Stage Researcher in MRTN PATTERNs and MSCA Experienced Researcher from his own MSCA Re-integration Grant – POLYPATT at UL.
Presently, he is a Lecturer in Physics in School of Physics, Clinical and Optometric Sciences in Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and he is the Coordinator of ‘The Group of Applied Physics – The GAP’ from the same institution. The group is looking to close ‘the gap’ between the academic and industrial research performed in small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the area of Space, Medical diagnostics and Energy (solar) applications. Since it was established in October 2020, The GAP attracted >1M Euro funding from various external funding sources, including European Space Agency, Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland (EMBARK) and/or through competitive internal TU Dublin research calls. Dr Amarandei is also a member of the European Space Agency biofilm topical team.
His research interests are broad falling under the following topics: development of plasmonics for energy (solar photovoltaics), space and medical applications; cantilever sensors and nano-mechanical tools for diagnostics; surface-enhanced Raman and infrared spectroscopy; spectral polarimetry; cancer diagnostics; thin polymer (nanocomposite) films; soft-matter (soft-lithography, biofilm, dry eye); light interaction with matter; light pollution and eye research; additive manufacturing; plasma physics.
Currently, Dr. Amarandei is (co-)supervising 7 PhD students and 3 MPhil (Master by Research) students and he has active research and educational collaborations with various Irish (Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University of Limerick) and European Universities (University of Muenster, University of Angers, University of Technology of Troyes, University of Nottingham, University of Kent, University of Innsbruck, University of Genoa etc.)
