个人简介
Dr. Almeida-Porada is a Professor of Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Affiliate Faculty Member, Molecular Medicine, Physiology and Pharmacology Wake Forest School of Medicine and Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences
Dr. Almeida-Porada received her medical degree in 1985 from the University of Porto, Portugal. She completed her residency in 1987 and fellowship in Hematology/Transfusion Medicine in 1994, and obtained her Ph.D. in Pathology from the same University in 1995. She was a fellow at the University of Connecticut Health Center and at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. She became faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1999. In 2001 she joined the Department of Animal Biotechnology at the same Institution, where she was a Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies. In 2006 she was inducted into Phi Beta Delta. She has been a member of several NIH study sections, she serves/ed as an Editor, or on the Editorial Boards of several scientific journals, and she is the 2015 president elect of NCTERMS. She is a founding member of the Perinatal Stem Cell Society and the Co-founder of the Fetal Transplantation and Immunology Society. Dr. Almeida-Porada has authored more than 200 scientific works including papers, abstracts, and book chapters.
Her contributions to the field of hematopoiesis include defining novel human hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell (HSC) phenotypes and demonstrating the importance of bone marrow-derived stromal populations in expansion of cord-blood derived HSC, and as enhancers of HSC engraftment in a pre-natal setting. Furthermore, by using a fetal sheep model as a tool to study hematopoietic development and engraftment/differentiation of putative human stem cells, Dr. Almeida-Porada showed the ability of human HSC and marrow-derived stromal populations to reprogram in vivo and differentiate to cells of other dermal derivations. She also used genetically engineered stromal cells to deliver therapeutic genes and correct diseases such as Hemophilia A, and developed means to overexpress specific proteins that enhance the immunomodulatory potential and allow increased engraftment of stromal cells.
