Bio
Fumiko received her Ph.D. training in the laboratory of Prof. Mitsuhiro Yanagida in Kyoto University, where she studied the regulation of the cell cycle and genotoxic stress response in fission yeast. She then joined Dr Stephen C West’s group at Cancer Research UK London Research Institute, supported by post-doctoral fellowships from the Human Frontier Science Program (2002-2005) and the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (2005-2007), to study the biochemical process of homologous recombination (HR). Since 2007, she is leading a research group in the University of Oxford, supported by a Cancer Research UK CDA (2007-2013) and a Wellcome Trust SRF in Basic Biomedical Science (2013-2018). Her current research focuses on understanding canonical and non-canonical functions of HR mediators in dividing cells, and how these mechanisms may contribute to the prevention of human disease associated with genome instability.
