I did my Phd studies working in SdhD (succinate dehydrogenase; subunit D) in Seville at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS) with predoctoral scholarship ("Excellence Fellowship" founded by Junta de Andalucía) under the direction of Dr. Jose Ignacio Piruat Palomo beetween 2010 and 2015.Those studies led to the publication of an article (Millan-Ucles et al., 2014), a review (Piruat and Millan-Ucles et al., 2014), oral defense of a poster in Keystone Symposia (Colorado, USA) and other publications in colaboration with other members of the group. Following the predoctoral period, I extended my studies on samples derived from human patients (peripherial blood and bone marrow), which also led to the publication of an article (Falantes et al., 2014) in collaboration with the Hematology service of Hospital Virgen del Rocío. I was also involved in the characterization of the hematological phenotype of the SdhD deficient mice (Bejarano-Garcia JA and Millan-Ucles A et al, 2016).
I have optimized a number of techniques including: cell culture, protein, DNA and RNA extraction, conventional and quantitative PCR, immunoprecipitation, western blotting, flow cytometry, cell sorting and animal studies (I have obtained the official accreditation for animal experimentation in categories B and C, with continuous training and formation during 2017, 2018 and 2019).
After this period, I obtained a contract financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Innovation at the National Centre of Biotechnology (Madrid), in the laboratory of AC Carrera, where I am currently developing my postdoctoral scientific activity. During this period, up today, I have been working on the contribution of phosphoinsitide 3-kinase beta (PI3K beta) on bladder carcinoma progression, which I published as the first author on Oncotarget (Millan- Ucles A et al, 2016).
My recent field of research is focused on the regulation and function of lipid and protein kinases, mainly PI3K as a therapeutic target in lung cancer and inflammation.
The goals in this research line are to find new mechanisms that controls cell survival through the PI3K pathway, and to extend the technological achievements to hypoxia implications.
