Career Trajectory
Bio
John Edgar French was born in Jackson, MS on January 31, 1943. He received his BS and MS degrees in biology and physiology at Mississippi State University and PhD in comparative biochemistry and molecular toxicology at North Carolina State University in 1977. Following post-doctoral training in radiation biology at AFRRI/NNMC in Bethesda, Maryland he performed bench research at AFRRI and NIH before joining the NIEHS/NTP in 1982. His research between 1982-2013 was focused on integration of toxicology and genetics (toxicogenetics) and developing population based models for preclinical research, i.e., discovery and reverse genetics research in mouse models (Collaborative Cross, Diversity Outbred) to aid translation to clinical research. Currently, he is employing the same research paradigm to better understand gene x environment and nutrient x gene interactions in development of metabolic dysregulation and insulin resistance in diet and environmental exposure induced obesity.
