Career Trajectory
Bio
After obtaining the PhD in Chemistry from the UAB in 2000, Z. Freixa enrolled the group of Prof. van Leeuwen (U. van Amsterdam) as a postdoctoral researcher (2001–2003). In 2004 she returned to Spain, joining the ICIQ as a Ramón y Cajal researcher and Group Manager of Prof. van Leeuwen’s group. During that period (2004–2009) she co-leaded all the research projects of the group (both academic and industrial). The main focus was on Supramolecular Catalysis with organometallic compounds. After a short period as a Lecturer at the University of Barcelona, in 2010, she obtained an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) that is currently holding.
Since she started her independent career, she has focused her research on developing photo-switchable organometallic complexes. The use of those stimuli-responsive entities in catalysis to create photo-switchable catalysts is the main focus of her research, but she is also exploring their use as photosensitizers for photoredox catalysis, as luminescent sensors, as photo-sensitizers for solar cells, or as (photo-activatable)metallodrugs. Since 2019, she is also part of the NEXT collaboration, an international and interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at unravelling the nature of the neutrino. Her contribution is on the development of luminescent sensors for single molecule detection.
The most relevant achievements in the different areas explored along her career are:
Homogeneous catalysis: She developed a ligand (SPANphos), which has been considered the first truly trans-spanning diphosphine ligand. Some of its organometallic complexes presented unique catalytic properties as described in the following publications, among others (ACIE 2003, ACIE 2005, Dalton 2006, OM 2005).
More rencently, she has also unravelled the mechanism operating in metal-catalyzed processes for the hydrogen generation by hydrolysis of amineborane adducts (ACS Cat. 2017, Organometallics 2020) and imine hydrosilylation (Catal. Sci & Tech 2018), using half-sandwich ruthenium and iridium complexes. In collaboration with Dr. Huertos and Dr. Matxain, she identified a unique example of an organometallic catalyst for hydrogen generation operating through hydrogen tunnelling (ACIE 2022).
Supramolecular catalysis: Together with Prof. van Leeuwen, she developed large libraries of supramolecularly-build ligands, very effective in both non-enantioselective and asymmetric catalytic processes (ACIE 2007, JACS 2011). She also established, for the first time, the possibility to use ionic interactions as a driving force for the construction of supramolecular catalysts (Chem. Eur. J. 2007, patent WO 2008031889 for BASF).
Photoswitchable catalysis: Recently, she developed the first example of a photo-tunable catalyst for the generation of hydrogen by hydrolysis of amino-borane adducts (Eur.JIC 2010, Dalton 2017) and wrote a review on the topic by invitation (Catal. Sci. Technol. 2020).
Luminescent sensors: In the last years, and as part of her participation in the NEXT-collaboration, she is focusing on the development of luminescent sensor for cations (Nature 2020, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2021, Nature Commun. 2022).
Other areas: She also maintains a collaboration with Dr. Pablo Ortiz (TECNALIA) and Dr Eduardo García (Energygune) on the development of non-isocianate based polyurethanes derived from CO2 and vegetable oils from which a PhD thesis with industrial and international mentions was recently defended.
Throughout her career, Dr. Freixa kept committed to training younger researchers. She has supervised 6 PhD doctoral thesis, 8 Master thesis (TFMs), 11 Final degree projects (TFGs), and several post-doctoral researchers and erasmus visiting researchers. She is currently supervising 3 PhD thesis and 1 Master thesis.
She has also been strongly involved in the reviewing and related activities: She is member of the ANECA Commission for the EUROLABEL European accreditation for Bachelor and Master Degrees in Chemistry since 2019, and has been member of the panel of experts for the evaluation of National Research Projects (2016, 2017, 2022), and Juan de la Cierva contracts (2020), of the panel of experts for the evaluation Evaluation of senior, junior, and principal contracts FCT-Portugal (2021, 2022), and external evaluator of projects for AIE (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018. 2020, 2021, 2022), FONCYT Argentina (2017), ANR France (2017, 2018, 2020, 2022), and Fundación Séneca (2018).
Dr. Freixa has published more than 60 research articles in international journals, 6 book chapters and is co-inventor of 3 patents in the area of organometallic catalysis (h index = 26, average citations per item = 34).
