Prof. Tangang’s current research interest covers climate variability and climate change in Malaysia and the Southeast Asia region. His scientific publications advance understanding of how ENSO affects climate variability over Malaysia and the Maritime Continent region. He also conducts research on regional ocean and wave modeling. He has successfully completed more than 15 research projects and published more than 60 scientific papers in reputable international journals. Prof. Tangang’s earlier research for his PhD dissertation at University of British Columbia (1993-1997) laid a foundation on the use of artificial intelligence in forecasting of the El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO). He developed a Neural Network Model to forecast ENSO and the model was the earlier version of a model that is currently used for forecasting El Niño by Climate Prediction Center (CPC), NCEP, NOAA. He has attended and presented papers/invited papers/keynote papers in more than 100 conferences and workshops. His current research interest is on understanding regional climate change and meeting the growing demand on high-resolution regional climate change scenarios over the Southeast Asia region. In 2013 Prof. Tangang championed the establishment of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling (SEACLID) / CORDEX Southeast Asia (http://www.ukm.edu.my/seaclid-cordex). His leadership in uniting scientists working in regional climate modeling in the Southeast Asia region to collaborate under SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia is exemplary. The level of collaboration in SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia was unprecedented, in which the project currently involved scientists from 20 institutions from 14 countries (7 from ASEAN and 7 from outside the region). This project narrows knowledge gaps on the scientific understanding of regional climate change over the Southeast Asia region and provides multi-models and multi-scenarios high-resolution model output products freely to the user community. With his leadership, the Southeast Asia RegiCurrently, Prof. Tangang also serves as one of the Vice-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I and IPCC Bureau member, representing Malaysia and countries in the Southwest Pacific region. He is the first Malaysian to be elected to the IPCC. Prof. Tangang obtained his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1997 where he conducted a research and developed a model to forecast the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). For the last 18 years or so he has been focusing his research on understanding climate variability and change in Malaysia and in the Maritime Continent region and also in atmospheric and ocean modeling. He has published more than 40 scientific papers in international journals (Scopus h-index 12; citations > 700). In recognition of his scientific contribution, Prof. Tangang was awarded the START Young Scientist Award in 2002. He regularly reviews article for publication in various journal including Journal of climate, Climate Dynamics, Monthly Weather Reviews and Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics. He is currently working on various research projects related to climate variability, climate change projection and ocean and atmospheric modelling. Prof. Tangang has supervised more than 15 PhD and MSc students. Prof. Tangang was also a consultant to the Malaysian Government for the future climate projection project over Malaysia. Prof. Tangang also served in various committees related to climate change at the national level. He has also presented various keynote papers related to climate change. He is currently the Project Leader of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling (SEACLID) / CORDEX Southeast Asia project (http://www.ukm.edu.my/seaclid-cordex), a regional project under the WCRP of World Meteorological Organization and funded by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research. He was also a project leader of the UNESCO IOC-WESTPAC Ocean Forecasting System (http://221.0.186.5/IOC-WESTPAC_OFDS/)
