Bio
F. Ribeiro graduated in Marine Biology (1998, Fac. Ciên. Univ. Lisboa-FCUL). He worked as a technician at Centro de Biol. Ambiental, leading a team of 5 people between 1998-2001. Between 2002 and 2008, he did his PhD in Conservation Biology, at FCUL and Univ. California-Davis, focusing on fish invasions in Mediterranean rivers. Since 2009, F. Ribeiro is a post-doc researcher at the Virginia Inst. Marine Sci. (VIMS) and Marine and Environmental Sci. Centre (MARE), studying larval fish ecology.
He authored 34 peer-reviewed papers, being the lead (16) and/or corresponding author (17) of the majority of them. Fifteen papers resulted from independent collaborations. He has an accumulated impact factor of 41 and a h-index of 13. The total number of citations is 537 in Scopus and 764 in G-Scholar. His major contributions are in Invasion Biology of freshwater fishes.
F. Ribeiro has large field experience (30 days/yr) and strong leadership ability. Besides leading a team of 5 people for 3 yr, he has mentored 6 undergraduate during his PhD, supervised 5 MSc students since 2010, hosted 7 exchange students (2012-17), and is the main supervisor of a post-doc researcher, Dr. Gkenas (BPD/84859/2012) – a rare accomplishment in one so early in his career. He hosted the 5th Iberian Cong. of Ichthyology in 2014 (ca. 200 participants from 20 countries) – a courageous decision for a post-doc fellow. In 2008, he initiated a larval fish collection at the National Museum Natural History, a rare resource among Nat. Hist. Museums.
F. Ribeiro is committed to scientific knowledge transfer, and has developed outreach initiatives such BioDiversity4All.org (Citizen Science) and Carta Piscicola.org (online database).
F. Ribeiro has successfully obtained funding as a PI from FCT competitive calls (PTDC/AAG-MAA/0350/2014 - ca. 190 000€), conservation funds (Species Conservation Fund, 12 000 USD), and from state sector: Portuguese Forestry Agency (100 000€; 2003-07), Fund. Biodiversidad (Spain;60 000€, 2013-present). He also secured private funds for the Biodiversity4All (40 000€; 2010-present). He is a consultant for Municipalities, Universities and Enterprises. He belongs to a scientific advisory group of a LIFE project (LIFE-Saramugo). Since 2012, he organizes and co-lectures the annual Freshwater Fish Identification course, counting over 110 participants (technicians, researchers and students) and raised 16 000€ from registration. From the 5th Iberian Cong. of Ichthyology, he secured funds of 30 000€ (40% from private sector).
F. Ribeiro is the youngest leading expert of freshwater fishes in Portugal dealing with fish invasions. He reviewed 40 manuscripts for 20 journals, mostly on invasion biology and fish ecology; participated in scientific panels (TUBITAK) and awards (Rufford Found, Fluviario); examined a PhD thesis (Univ. Navarra) and 2 MSc thesis (Univ. Evora). He launched a peer-review journal, Fishes in Mediterranean Environments, with Dr. Clavero (Est Biol Donana), and is the President of the Iberian Soc. of Ichthyology.
