Career Trajectory
Bio
I am graduated in Biochemistry and Physics and obtained my PhD in Biomedical Sciences, specialty in Neurosciences, having worked at: iMM, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa; Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC), Universidade do Porto; and Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain. During my PhD, I studied the role of adenosine receptors on neuronal maturation and adult neurogenesis, and their interaction with brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF). In addition, I have also been interested in the influence of cannabinoid receptors on the known actions of BDNF in postnatal neurogenesis. I have been actively involved in different collaborations. I have worked as a Science and Technology Manager of the H2020 twinning project "Neurologic and Psychiatric Disorders: from synapses to networks (SynaNet)" at iMM (2016-2018). As a postdoc, I have been interested in developing artificial astrocytes as a novel approach to regulate neuronal communication and in the role of gliotransmission in depression. As a result of my work, I published 2 book chapters and 18 papers, from which 7 as first author: 4 original papers and 3 reviews; and 1 as the second last author. The other 10 papers are a result of collaborations. Additionally, I contributed with 12 Conference Abstracts and 75 communications (45 posters, 30 oral). I was a member of the iMM/CAML PhD Students Committee (2013-2015) and I am currently a member of the iMM Post-Doctoral Association (2020-present). I have participated in the activities of the Brain Awareness Week held in Portugal, since 2010, being an enthusiastic about science divulgation to the general public. I have experience in mentoring students, and I am currently co-supervising a MSc student in his thesis. I participated in the organization of 6 scientific events and have been awarded with 7 travel grants for participation in scientific meetings/courses. I am a member of Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurociências (SPN) and Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), since 2011. Moreover, I have been a solicited reviewer of the scientific journals: Journal of Neurochemistry, Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience and Neural Regeneration Research.
I have experience in primary neuronal cortical cultures, DG- and SVZ-derived neurosphere cultures, techniques of molecular biology such as transfection, western blotting, Co-immunoprecipitation, ELISA, flow cytometry and immuno(cy/his)tochemistry, single cell calcium imaging, electrophysiology, widefield and confocal microscopies, image analysis, in vivo surgeries with stereotaxic implantation of intracerebroventricular cannulas and injection, rat perfusions, stereology for cell counting, assembling of microreactors.
