Bio
Fernando Martinez Castillejo studied Chemistry at Complutense University of Madrid from 1992 to 1997. He made his Doctoral Thesis on the development of heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment. He joined the Chemical Technology and Environmental Department of ESCET in Rey Juan Carlos University as a Teaching Professor in 2001. After several years working in this university as a Teaching and Assistant Professor, he became Associate Professor in 2009. He did a pre-doctoral stay, in Santa Barbara (UCSB, USA, 2001), and two post-doctoral stays, at the University of Manchester (UMIST, United Kingdom, 2004-2005) and Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona, Spain, 2006). In the last years, he has been focused on Fenton-like processes (assisted by UV-VIS, ultrasound and heating-CWPO) for removal of recalcitrant and toxic pollutants of industrial wastewaters and also coupling with biological treatments (sequencing batch reactors and rotating biodisc contactors) with the main purpose of achieving more sustainable and economic technologies. He is the coordinator of REMTAVARES network integrated by four research groups from the major public Universities in Madrid (S2019/EMT-4341; https://remtavares.com/). REMTAVARES is in contact several productive sectors providing effective technological solutions for waste effluents and instrumental facilities for water characterization. He is a leader of WP1 of DEEP PURPLE project (H2020-BBI-JTI-2018, https://deep-purple.eu/), a consortium of 14 partners from six European Union countries (France, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Italy and United Kingdom) and PI of the OIL2BIO project (CTM2017-82865-R). In these projects, he has contributed to the conversion of biowastes and refinery waste effluents into sustainable materials and products using purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) as flexible photobiorefineries. The application of PPB has been also extended to explore bielectrochemical systems for hydrogen production and carbon fixation in several projects.
During his research career, he has published 94 JCR-indexed documents with high impact (ca. 70% Q1) in the field of Chemical and Environmental Engineering with 3394 bibliographic citations (Dec 9th 2021; SCOPUS, h-index 34). He has published 11 book chapters. The analysis of the impact of his research work in the last 10 years (Dec 2021; SCIVAL) shows the publication of 56 scientific papers with a field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) of 1.56 (1.78-2.12 in the topics related to the proposal) and a share of international collaborations of 21.4 %, as well as of 49 % of his publications in top 10 % journals and 21.4 % of them in top 10% most cited worldwide. These numbers reflect both the quality of his publications and the high impact of his results and achievements in the scientific community. Regarding the participation in scientific conferences, he has been involved in more than 120 contributions, most of them in high-impact international events (43% oral contributions).
To support this scientific career, he has participated with a prominent role in a high number of R&D projects with public competitive funding (26 projects, 9 as principal investigator). He has been signed 15 research and service contracts with companies (14 as principal investigator). He maintains an active collaboration with Aqualia FCC, leading to 1 patent for an anaerobic photobioreactor for valorization of wastewater obtaining high-value products (ADVANSIST) and REPSOL through OIL2BIO and UPGRES (PLEC2021-007761) projects, and industrial PhD, and several R&D contracts for characterization of hydrocarbon cuts and materials.
Regarding the training of researchers, he currently participates in the Doctorate Program in Industrial Technologies and the Doctorate Program in Communications and Information Technologies, at URJC. He has supervised 5 Doctoral Thesis (1 International Mention) and is currently supervising 4 PhD students. He has been also responsible for: i) 1 post-doc researcher from Juan de la Cierva program (Daniel Puyol Santos), now a researcher of Ramón y Cajal Program and member of the research team of this project; ii) 1 Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship; iii) 1 laboratory technician, 2 graduate students and 1 post-doctoral researcher from the Youth Employment Operational Program of Regional Community of Madrid for young researchers. Currently, he is the supervisor of 1 GOT ENERGY TALENT (GET) fellowship as part of the H2020-MSCA-COFUND programme (Grant Agreement number 754382). Likewise, he has been the supervisor of more than 40 final degrees and master thesis in different engineering courses at URJC.
Other research merits: 3 “6-Year Research Positive Evaluations” (2000-2017) and 1 “6-Year “knowledge transfer and innovation Positive Evaluation” (2003-2017)
