个人简介
My research focuses in the multidisciplinary study of marine invertebrates using cephalopods as model organisms: reproduction, early development, trophic ecology, phylogenomics and speciation. I combined several highly specialized cutting-edge approaches, such as histology, electron microscopy, in vitro fertilization, DNA barcoding and metabarcoding, phylogenomics and molecular species delimitation methods (e.g., GMYC).
I pioneered the use of a new method for precise dissections of tiny organisms for diet assessment: Laser-Capture Microdissection (LCM) of histologically-processed samples in combination with DNA metabarcoding (-omics method), which is an important technical milestone and advance for the field of trophic ecology. I repeatedly demonstrated my independence and maturity as scientist bringing new research lines lacking in the research groups I was working (molecular dietary assessment, cryptic biodiversity discovery, and evolutionary study of morphology) and methods (LCM, DNA metabarcoding, and phylogenetics), and also furthering international collaborations with colleagues from the USA, México, Japan, Ireland, New Zealand or India, among others.
I was awarded with a prestigious HIGHLY COMPETITIVE (<13% of success rate) Government of Ireland – Irish Research Council postdoctoral fellow (2019-2021) for the development of a worldwide evolutionary project based on state-of-the-art phylogenomics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) in the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG): I demonstrated my leadership as early researcher by developing an innovative Genome Skimming NGS approach for the study of the evolutionary trends of morphological and physiological traits related with trophic strategies in the deep sea, as well as the effect of oceanic barriers to gene flow and subsequent speciation. I obtained the first well-solved phylogeny of oceanic squids at the family level based on –omics methods, a group with controversial phylogenetic relations. I increase the funding for my research line obtaining a competitive grant from the non-profit American association Conchologist of America. I also developed mentoring activities for PhD students of the lab, participate in seminar and clubs, and engage in outreach activities, as the development of activities for kids affected by the COVID pandemic.
Later (2022-2023), I was awarded with a Juan de la Cierva Incorporación fellowship 2020, which is an HIGHLY COMPETITIVE program (<13 % of success) for the study of the trophic ecology of cephalopods at the Marine Science Institute of Barcelona (ICM-CSIC).
Currently, I work on trophic ecology, microbiome and parasitology of cephalopods thanks to the competitive program Beatriu de Pinòs, from from Secretaria d ́Universitats i Recerca del Departament de Recerca i Universitats of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
During my stages in different national and international institutions, I complemented the ongoing technical and scientific lines, and contributed to expand and improve the scientific goals of the research group. I mentored 4 Bachelor and 4 Master Theses, and currently I am supervising 2 PhD thesis and a Master Thesis. I the co-principal investigator of competitive two projects funded by public Spanish institutions (cummulative value: >230 K€). I also have experience on-board research vessels in four oceanographic cruises developed in international and national waters, sampling both pelagic and benthic communities. I also have experience sampling in fishing vessels in both the Mediterranean Sea (Spain) and in the Sea of Cortez (Mexico). I developed research stages in the Stanford University (USA, 3 months), the National University of Ireland Galway (Ireland, 2 years), the MNCN-CSIC (Spain, cummulative time 14 months) and the University of Oviedo (Spain, cummulative time >4 years).
