个人简介
I started my research engagement by investigating sexual value systems, development pattern of sexual behaviors, and values given to virginity and boy/girl friend in young people. Findings of these studies helped to develop HIV prevention policies in Universities and strengthen sexual health services in Ethiopia. Later, I became interested in understanding the comorbidity of mood disorders with chronic physical illnesses particularly tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. I investigated: the typical manifestation of depression in people with tuberculosis where several symptoms of tuberculosis overlap with that of depression and clinicians become confused to decide whether they should consider the overlapping symptoms for depression diagnosis or not; the impact of untreated depression on the treatment outcomes of tuberculosis; the incidence of depression in the course of tuberculosis treatment; as well as how depression is related to the pathways to tuberculosis care. These studies informed the health care system and researchers that the overlapping physical symptoms can be double counted for depression as far as the cognitive symptoms co-occur; biological cure of tuberculosis should be complemented by functioning and quality of life assessments when measuring recovery from tuberculosis; and the mere treatment of tuberculosis may not treat co-occurring depression. More recently, I am engaged in testing non-pharmacologic intervention (group interpersonal therapy) to treat depression in people with tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. The intention is to prevent pill burden, cost, drug interaction, and side effects. I am also broadening my focus from co-morbidity to the understanding of multimorbidity and the models of care for it. Multimorbidity is more killer and disabling than single conditions. Unfortunately, understanding about it is limited and health systems are not ready well to tackle it. My interests are to understand the multimorbidity of the major chronic illnesses clearly and propose models of care that can be adapted to various settings.
