Bio
Fátima Raquel Maia obtained her BSc and MSc degrees in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 2007 and 2008, respectively. In 2008 she was awarded a 4 years PhD scholarship that allowed her to study the use of nanostructured 3D natural polymeric matrices capable to direct mesenchymal stem cells behaviour. Along this period of time, she was granted with a scholarship from Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD) for a 6-month internship at the Department of Animal Biotechnology of the University of Nevada-Reno, USA, where she worked under the supervision of Dr Graça Almeida-Porada. Additionally, she also visited and performed some experimental work in collaboration with the Development and Evolutionary Morphogenesis Group, lead by Dr Solveig Thorsteinsdóttir at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2010 she has received a Best Poster Award at the “Trends in Nanotechnology” International Conference 2010. In 2014, Fátima Raquel Maia obtained her PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering, which was approved with distinction from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. In the same year, she started as a Postdoc fellow at 3B’s Research Group where she used her knowledge in Tissue Engineering to develop new approaches for cancer and osteoarthritis research. In 2015 she went to the Cell and Molecular Biology Bone Research Group, Department of Medicine at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, under the supervision of Professor Jillian Cornish, with a scholarship awarded from Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds. During this period she acquired relevant knowledge on osteoclastogenesis, know-how that she was able to bring to 3B’s Research Group. In 2017 she was awarded an FCT Postdoc fellowship (ref: SFRH/BPD/117492/2016) envisioning to deepen the knowledge on cancer biology. Meanwhile, she went, in the scope of project BAMOS, to the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science in Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, University College of London, UK and Xi’an Jiaotong University, China. This project supports the short-term mobility of research and innovation staff, envisioning the development of a novel cost-effective osteochondral scaffold. At the moment she is a Junior Investigator with a contract under “Norma Transitória DL 57/2016 - Lei 57/2017”. From the work performed, the applicant produced 19 Scopus indexed publications with over 300 citations, 4 book chapters and 1 patent, resulting in an h-index of 9, according to Scopus. She was a member of 4 concluded projects, 3 FCT funded and 1 European Commission funded. Currently, she is a member of 4 FCT funded projects and 2 European funded projects. Along her path, she has been co-supervising non-formally PhD and MSc students. Additionally, since the beginning of her career, she was involved in different initiatives for enhancing public awareness of science. Finally, she has been involved in the organization of several events, in projects preparation and submission with international collaboration. Noteworthy, she was elected as a referee in 16 scientific international journals and she is part of the Reviewer Board (RB) of Polymers (ISSN 2073-4360).
