Research interests
Dr. Zhou’s research group is a young and dynamic team with PhD/Master students, research staff, visiting scholars/students and honors students. Her research mainly focuses on two themes: drug screening and development against human diseases, particularly eye diseases; the other is molecular characterisation and regulation of human Solute Carrier Transporters. She has widely collaborated with national and international experts in these research topics and published at the top journals in the field.
Theme 1:drug screening and development against human diseases, particularly eye diseases
Human retina is the light-sensitive tissue layer of the eye, which is responsible for converting light into neural signals to the brain for image formation. There are many prevalent retinal diseases in humans, which are not well understood and lack of effective treatments. Dr. Zhou's research is endeavored to explore the pathogenesis of these diseases, seek novel therapeutic targets and develop new drugs/therapies to treat or prevent such diseases.
Theme 2: molecular characterisation and regulation of human Solute Carrier Transporters
Human Solute Carrier Influx Transporters (SLCs) are membrane proteins responsible for cellular uptake of molecules. SLCs play important roles in drug absorption, distribution and elimination, thus they largely influence drug pharmacokinetic performance. Dr. Zhou's research explores how SLCs impact on the performance of drugs in healthy or disease status, which is clinically important for therapeutic optimisation.
