Bio
I am a Pharmacist, Master in Biopharmaceutical Sciences, PhD in Bioengineering, with an h-index of 4 and i10-index of 3 (March 2022).
I enrolled in 2016 in the PhD program in Bioengineering – Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon andconcluded my Ph.D. thesis (Novel electrospun scaffolds for neural stem cell differentiation under electrical stimulation) in 2021 (pass with distinction). During 2017 to 2018 I was a visiting scholar at RPI, USA. From 2020 to 2021 I worked as a researcher for project Stimuli2BioScaffold, a joint-project between IST and Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, where I developed electroconductive scaffolds for electrical stimulation of bone cells. During all this time I assisted in mentoring undergraduate students, both at RPI and IST.
I developed new research-approaches to electroconductive materials, namely 1) optimized a solvent system to enhance the electrical properties of polyaniline-based fibers, through pseudo-doping, for neural applications; 2) designed biodegradable and electroconductive coaxial electrospun fibers for prolonging PANI-based scaffolds electroconductivity for up to 28 days in water, and 3) developed new PEDOT-based scaffolds (electrospinning and hydrogel).
I also studied the biology of neural stem cells, including 4) the effect of electrical stimulation on neural differentiating iPSCs into matured neurons and 5) the changes in the glycosaminoglycan profile of differentiating NSCs.
I am currently interested in developing artificial organs capable of electrically stimulate co-cultures of different cell populations. For this, my research interests broad very diverse areas, including Additive manufacturing, Electrical stimulation, Electroconductive polymers, Natural/Synthetic Materials Science and Chemistry, Neurosciences, Human/Stem/Cancer Cell Biology and Microfluidics.
