Bio
FÁTIMA FERNANDES (Porto, Portugal, 1961). In 1986 she graduates in architecture from ESBAP (Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto). She teaches Architectural Design and Landscape at ESAP (Escola Superior Artística do Porto) since 1996. Defended her PhD thesis entitled THE ARCHITECTURE AT THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE LANDSCAPE at the ETSAM (Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid. Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). Conducts research in the field of architecture and urban planning with a focus on themes related to the influence of architecture in the construction of territorial infrestruturas and transformation of the landscape.
Fernandes has been invited to give lectures and to participate in national and internacional exhibitions such as: Biennale de Venezia; Triennale de Milano; "Construir, Habitar, Pensar” IVAM Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderna, Spain; ”Arquitectura de Autor” ETS de Arquitectura de la Universidade de Navarra, Spain; ”Portugal Now” Department of Architecture, Cornell University, New York, USA; Internacional Expositions of Architecture ”Andrea Palladio” Basílica Paladiana, Vicenza, Itália. Since 1999, she is the curator of Architecture events at AEP. In 2003, was responsible for the Scientific Coordination of ASA Editions’ Architecture Department. From 2004 to 2006, she was responsible for the Scientific Coordination of Civilização Editions’ Architecture Department.
Moreover, she has received several awards e.g.: Andrea Palladio Honourable Mention Prize, Vicenza, Italy (1989); Piranesi Prize attribution of the Sciences and Arts Academy of Slovenia (1996) ; 2nd Prize Singular Residency attribution of the Superior Council of Spanish Architects (2004); Nominee Work in Prize FAD, Barcelona, Spain (2005); the Accésit Prize, attribution of the Superior Council of Spanish Architects, Madrid, Spain (2006). In 2008 she received the 1st Prize for the Multifunctional Building of the Serralves Foundation Competition, in collaboration with SANAA/Kazuyo Sejima & Ryue Nishizawa.
Fernandes has been working with Michele Cannatà since 1984, with whom, founded the CANNATÀ & FERNANDES arquitectos. They have work built in Portugal and abroad and this is published in monografis, books and architecture magazines in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, USA, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, South Korea, China and Japan.
