Biomedical Engineer
Fernando S. Schlindwein was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1956. He graduated with a First Class Honours degree as an Electronic Engineer in 1979 from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with an extension degree in Nuclear Engineering. After a short time in industry (Aços Finos Piratini, a steel mill) he obtained an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Coordination of Post-Graduation Programmes in Engineering of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ), Brazil in 1982, a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Department of Surgery of the University of Leicester, England in 1990, and a DSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1992. He was a lecturer associated with UFRJ from August 1980 until 1992, when he joined the Department of Engineering at the University of Leicester as a lecturer in Bioengineering. In 2001 he was promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer and in 2013 he was promoted to the post of Reader. He has also been a lecturer of the Department of Electronics of the Brazilian Navy Academy for Officers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from March 1981 to August 1982. Dr. Schlindwein has taught more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate modules and he published ca. 90 papers in refereed journals and ca. 210 papers in scientific meetings. He has successfully supervised 12 research students at PhD level, 33 at Master’s level, 12 at Scientific Initiation level and 97 Final Year Projects. He was on the Examining Board of 44 postgraduates (8 of them as external examiner) and he is currently supervising 4 PG research students. He is currently 3rd and 4th Year Tutor in the Engineering Department at Leicester and lectures Electrical Engineering, Digital Signal Processing and Real-time Signal Processing at the University of Leicester. His current research interests are real-time digital signal processing, with more intense research activities in Cardiac arrhythmias (especially atrial fibrillation) heart rate variability and automatic monitoring using the ECG. Most of his teaching experience is on Digital Signal Processing (including digital signal processors) and microprocessor / microcomputer (including design and programming of microcomputers and peripherals). In 1994 he was an invited member of the Scientific Program Committee for the World Congress of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, responsible for organising the session on Signal Processing and has recently chaired a session at Computers in Cardiology (CinC). He has spent a sabbatical semester as a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, doing research on heart rate variability and asphyxia. Dr Schlindwein is a Chartered Engineer, a Senior Fellow of the HEA, a member of the IEEE, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (for whom he is on the panel for accreditation of MSc courses in Bioengineering and Medical Physics) and the Brazilian Society of Biomedical Engineering. He also serves on the International Editorial Board of the Brazilian Journal of Biomedical Engineering and has been Associate Editor of the International Journal of Systems Science.
