Bio
Originally from Chile, Francisca is a veterinarian and aquatic animal health expert who joined the Sydney School of Veterinary Science in 2021 as Senior Lecturer in Intensive Animal Production and Health.
Francisca received her BVSc and Professional Degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2010 from Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile. After graduating from her DVM and before moving to Australia in 2013, Francisca worked in the R&D section of a pharmaceutical company in Chile developing vaccines against the most important pathogens of farmed salmon.
In 2018, Francisca completed a MSc and PhD in Aquaculture at the University of Melbourne. HerPhD studied the transmission dynamics of the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), an external parasite of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), by conducting a multidisciplinary study of its biology and epidemiology to enhance prevention and control. After her PhD, Francisca did a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the CSIRO investigating an emerging fish virus of concern to the Tasmanian salmon industry, the Pilchard orthomyxovirus (POMV). Working in close collaboration with the industry, the goal of her fellowship was to gain a better understanding of the immune responses and host-pathogen interactions between the virus and its host to improve early detection and prevention.
Francisca is interested in the dynamics of disease transmission, veterinary epidemiology, fish immunology and microbiology. She has a keen interest in developing alternatives to antimicrobials for mitigating diseases affecting aquaculture species.
Francisca uses holistic system-based approaches including disease modelling, computational biology and bioinformatics, combined with traditional molecular biology and microbiology, to better understand the mechanisms that underpin the occurrence of disease in aquatic systems.
Francisca strongly believes that the involvement of veterinarians in the aquaculture sector is vital for the development of a sustainable industry.
