Bio
Felix Ivanovich Ershov (born December 10, 1931, Moscow) is a Russian virologist, head of the department of interferons and the laboratory of interferonogenesis at the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after honorary academician N. F. Gamaleya, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences [1], full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In 1956 he graduated with honors from the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute (now the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov) and was left in graduate school at the Department of Microbiology. In 1959, he defended his Ph.D. thesis ahead of schedule on the topic "Biological characteristics and classification of Newcastle dysentery bacteriophages" (supervisor - Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences V. D. Timakov). In 1959-1962 he worked at the Central Research Laboratory (TsNIL) of his alma mater. In 1962 he moved to the Institute of Virology. D. I. Ivanovsky of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, where he worked first as a senior researcher, then as head of the laboratory of virus ontogenesis and the department of virus reproduction. In 1966 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Patterns of the reproduction of RNA-containing viruses" (scientific consultant - Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences V. M. Zhdanov). In 1970, F. I. Ershov was awarded the academic title of professor in the specialty "virology". From 1988 to the present, he has been the head of the department of interferons and the laboratory of interferonogenesis of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Honorary Academician N. F. Gamaleya.
Chairman of the Specialized Commission on Antivirals of the Pharmacological Committee of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, member of the All-Russian Societies of Microbiologists and Virologists, member of the International Committee of the Russian Branch of the International Association of Interferon and Cytokine Researchers (ISICR). He is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Acta Virologica, Materia Medica, Issues of Virology, New Drugs, Cytokines and Inflammation, and others.
F. I. Ershov carried out fundamental studies of the molecular biology of arboviruses: the physicochemical parameters and features of the biosynthesis of macromolecules of this group of viruses were determined, the possibility of synthesis of RNA and proteins of viruses on subcellular structures was discovered, the possibility of replication of hybrid infectious viral RNAs in isolated mitochondria was established, and the phenomenon of formation infectious RNP complexes called "pseudoviruses" (in 1969 this phenomenon was registered as a discovery in the State Register of Inventions and Discoveries).
In 1962, F. I. Ershov, the first in the USSR, began the experimental development of the problem of interferons, discovered five years earlier. The research was devoted to deciphering the patterns of induction, production and action of interferons, obtaining and translating messenger RNA of interferons and antiviral proteins, and developing new methods of interferon superinduction. These works enriched medical science with new original data on the interferon system and showed its most important role in the natural (innate) resistance of the organism. For the first time, an original classification of interferon inductors was proposed, and a wide range of their antiviral and immunostimulating effects was experimentally proven. For the first time, methods for selecting (screening) and evaluating interferon inducers were developed, which formed the basis for the creation of a number of new domestic preventive and therapeutic drugs: larifan, kagocel, ridostin, amixin, cycloferon and a number of others, which have found wide clinical use in viral hepatitis, herpetic lesions, encephalitis, influenza, acute respiratory infections and other diseases. The possibility of overcoming the state of hyporeactivity (refractoriness) to repeated induction of interferon was proved, optimal schemes for the clinical use of these drugs were developed, and a conclusion was made about the prospects for the combined use of interferon inducers with chemotherapy drugs, vaccines and immunomodulators.
In 1983, F.I. Ershov and his school developed a set of methods for determining the interferon status of a person, which made it possible to scientifically substantiate the indications and control the effectiveness of the clinical use of interferon and its inducers. The informative value of determining the interferon status has been confirmed in various oncological, allergic and viral diseases, as well as in the examination of athletes and astronauts.
He has more than 30 copyright certificates for inventions and 16 patents of the Russian Federation. Under his leadership, 21 doctoral and 52 master's theses were completed.
