Dr. Focher was trained as a Molecular Biologist and spent his career at the Institute of Molecular Genetics (IGM) – National Research Council (Pavia, Italy), culminating in the position of Director of Research and Member of the Scientific Board of IGM. His expertise in Biochemistry, Enzymology and Molecular Biology includes cloning, expression, purification and characterization of several enzymes involved in viral, bacterial, protozoal and human DNA replication and repair, e.g. DNA polymerases, nucleoside kinases, uracil-DNA glycosylases, dUTPases etc. Most of his researches are focused on the biochemical and in vitro enzymatic characterization of specific inhibitors of viral, prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA replication. Current efforts are devoted to the study of specific inhibitors of human adenosine kinase, Clostridium difficile DNA polymerase IIIC, and HSV thymidine kinase. Because of his outstanding studies in History of Biology (five books and several papers published in the field), he was appointed Lecturer of History of Biology at the University of Pavia (90 publications in Pub-Med; H-index: 28).
